What Are Warts & Verrucas?

Warts and verruca are unsightly lesions that are caused by the wart virus. This can enter the skin through small cuts and grazes in vulnerable people. The wart virus is very contagious and this means that warts and verrucas spread very easily. The wart virus can also exist for a period of time outside the body, which is how it can be spread very easily by sharing towels and at places such as the swimming baths.

Wart & Verruca Treatment

The Nd:Yag laser works by selectively destroying blood vessels without damaging the surrounding tissues. By destroying the blood vessels inside the wart or verruca that are feeding and nourishing it, and also by heating the virus to a certain temperature, ensures that the lesions are effectively removed. In order for the laser to penetrate the thick, calloused skin on top of the wart or verruca, it is necessary for us to pare down the lesion before treatment. This involves scraping the thickened skin off before we apply the laser treatment.

We can treat adults and children over the age of 13 by laser at our clinic.

Step by Step Warts & Verrucas

The first step to take is to book a consultation with one of our highly experienced Clinic Practitioners. You will run through your full medical history and the treatment will be explained to you. If you decide to go through with Wart & Verruca Removal, an appointment with one of our practitioners will be arranged for you.

The treated wart/ verruca will turn black and form a thickened scab, which must not be picked or scratched. The lesion takes around 3-4 weeks to heal completely. The area may feel very hot for a few days.

You will be required to wear protective goggle over your eyes during laser treatment. The area will be numbed using a local anaesthteic injection. The ward will then be pared down to remove the thickened skin. After this the laser light is applied. You will not feel the treatment.

FAQ’s About Warts & Verrucas

Most people describe the treatment by laser as hot rather than painful. We are able to administer a local anaesthetic before treatment which makes the treatment painless. The treated area may be tender for around 7 days after treatment, but it heals very quickly. Most patients say the treated area is less tender than walking on the original verruca!

The wart virus is particularly virulent which means it can be difficult to destroy. It is also very easily spread to other parts of your body and to other people. Warts and verrucas have a very scaly, horny layer of skin over the top of them which makes it difficult for lotions, acids and other treatments to penetrate the lesion. GP’s often advise that warts and verrucas will clear up on their own if left for a couple of years, but we regularly see people at our Droitwich Worcestershire Verruca Clinic who have been suffering for many, many years. Stubborn or recalcitrant warts are very successfully treated by laser when all other treatments have failed.

Chiropodists are often able to help people suffering with verrucas if the infection is mild or the verrucas are single lesions. We are a medical led clinic, but we are not Chiropodists. Our staff have many years experience in treating warts and verrucas and also treating children. Our experience is in laser treatment, where we are experts in our field, and our skill and expertise lies in selecting the correct parameters to destroy the wart virus, which in turn kills the wart or verruca lesion.

Our laser treatment should be enough to destroy the wart virus and therefore the lesion. Sometimes, recalcitrant warts take 2 sessions to remove them completely, but most warts and verrucas are successfully removed in just one treatment. After treatment we recommend using a specialist foot cream that is high in PolyHydroxy acids (PHA’s) and this helps to stop the hard calloused skin regrowing over the treated area. We will advise you about this during your treatment. It is not necessary for any further home care to be carried out after your laser treatment.
